About the build

One small decision app, an entire stack behind it.

Wonder Wheel started as a fix for the nightly “so… what do you fancy?” stalemate. Under the hood it is a full production build: AI-generated options, real venues looked up near you, accounts that remember your favourite picks, and a hand-drawn wheel that commits you to an answer. Designed, built and shipped by one person — with a healthy amount of AI pair-programming.

ASP.NET Core 8

MVC app with ASP.NET Identity for accounts, Entity Framework Core for data, and a clean REST API powering the wheel.

Gemini 2.5 Flash

Every wheel is generated live by Google’s LLM — structured JSON out, complete with descriptions, tags and action links.

Google Places API

Food and walks pull real, currently-open venues near you — ratings, price levels, photos and directions included.

Azure

Hosted on Azure App Service (UK South) with Azure SQL behind it. Secrets stay in configuration, never in code.

Canvas + GSAP

The wheel is drawn on a raw 2D canvas; GSAP drives the motion design and canvas-confetti celebrates your fate.

PostHog analytics

Every spin, wizard step and saved pick is instrumented — the product is tuned from how people actually use it.
